Final Project

Dorm life is a better way to live compared to home life. When living in a dorm, you are on your own and realize personal responsibility is a result of your independence. Besides the many life lessons learned in a dorm, life itself is less of a hassle. A person does not have to commute, and could leave five minutes before class without being late. In a dorm, you are living amongst friends, and it is a great way to meet new people.According to a study conducted by The University of Washington, although students who dorm have the tendency to have their GPA drop, they still prefer dorm life over home life.(4). Home life does not compare to dorm life due to the lessons learned, its convenience, and the overall fun of living on your own.

Dorm life can not be compared to home life. In a dorm, there are always activities going on, and there is always something to do. When living amongst your peers, you often have similar interests, and you are forced to associate with one another. People meet new people, and strong friendships are created. According to Meghan Oleary, "When you live in a dorm, it's hard to be lonely. There's always someone hanging out in the hallway looking for a friendly conversation."(2). Personally, a dorm has given me many activities to do. I have made so many friends, and there are constantly people coming in and out of my dorm. Sometimes, I feel like being left alone, however I am glad that there are so many friends who want to go out and have a good time. Dorm life definitely has a positive impact on an student's social life.
On the contrary, home life does have some benefits. A college education is extremely expensive, and by living at home a student would not have to bear the expense of a dorm. However, there are millions of scholarships out there to pay for college expenses. According to a survey done by Natwest Student Money Matters in 2006, 1 in every 5 university students live at home during their studies, and this trend is steadily rising.(1). However, it can be inferred that 4 out of 5 students are not living at home, and 80 percent is an etremely large amount. At home, a person has all of the privacy he or she needs, and does not have to deal with friends constantly, especially in a co ed dorm can often lead to controversy. However, the amount friends and good times had overrides the lack of privacy. lt is better to have friends constantly involved in your life than no one at all. A student has a lot of distractions in a dorm, where at home a person has more time do take care of important things, and to study. Yet college years are supposed to be the most fun time of a person's life, and a person could easily balance studying and having a good time.

Dorm life is extremely convenient for a student. To be able to wake up five minutes before class starts, and not be late is great. Many people have class and a break between class and have nowhere to go. It is convenient to be able to get a couple of more hours of sleep before going back to class. According to Naomi Rockler, "lf you feel like rolling out of bed at 9:45 to go to your 10:00 a.m. class? No problem if you live on campus! You can walk everywhere that you need to go and don't have to deal with the hassles of parking and commuting."(3). Food is available constantly in the multiple cafes on campus, and everything is a walking distance away. Me being an athlete living on campus is ideal. The baseball field is my backyard, and the fitness center is across the street. In the winter time, there is a batting cage constantly open for baseball players in the school, and this is a 2 minute walk from where I sleep. For non athletes, there is a pool hall and many other fun activities to do. Food, fun, and class are all so close, therefore the convenience of a dorm is unmatched.

Living in a dorm teaches a person many life lessons. In a dorm, a person is forced to make their own decisions, and learns how these decisions impact their lives. A person has no one to tell him or her to go to class, and not to go out the night before exams. According to the College Life, "Some college students don't mind living with their parents. And some do. When you're living away from home, your parents will have a whole lot less say in your everyday life-- and to many students, that's exhilarating."(4). Before I came to college, I was very sloppy and did not know how to cook. After three months on my own, I could fend for myself, and learned how to be responsible. I set time aside for doing laundry and cooking, yet I still have time to study and go out. Dorm life has taught me that I must manage my time wisely, and that many of my decisions effect me as well as the people around me.

Dorm life is a better way to live than home life. Although home life has its advantages, it does not compare to the experience of living in a dorm. There is constant fun in a dorm, and living amongst your peers always gives a person something to do. It is extremely convenient to live on campus, especially not having to wake up early for class. Living in a dorm teaches responsibility, and teaches a person how to make decisions and live with the consequences of those decisions. Dorm life is indeed the best way to live.

G20

College students had a protest against the G20 meeting. The 20 most powerful people in the world met in Pitsburgh, and these 20 people alone control up to 80 percent of of the worlds economy. These protesters were college students, just like our class. The police used less lethal force in order to prevent a riot, and to control the crowd. Yes they there were probably some students who were disruptive and wild, yet the police were using extreme measures. Remember, these were college students, yet the police were treating them as criminals. The scary thing is that the police were using riot control tactics that they use on terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is very possible that more techniques perfected in Iraq could be used in the United States. The G20 will have to meet in New York soon, and it is very possible that we will be a part of the type of situation that happened in Pittsburgh.

The news and live video clips were very different. The news classified the college students as anarchists, not as students walking home from school. The news sugar coated the situation, and made it seem like the police were just doing their job to prevent a protest from turning into a full scale riot. However, the video clip showed that the police were telling the students to disperse, yet were surrounding them on all sides. The students truly were the victims. They were trying to go home, yet had nowhere to go. The video showed a woman getting hit by a policeman, showing the true brutality of the situation. There was a huge difference between the news and the video clips.

I find it very strange that this event happened in September, yet I am just hearing about it now. I feel that the news does not want the people to think their freedom of speech is not there. During the presentation in room 230, the lawyer had an effect on me. He was a really smart guy, who was talking about a similar incident. The government tried to convict people of crimes who could not disperse, yet this man got 90 percent of them off the hook. It is ridiculous how the government could try to convict people of a crime, if they were just walking on the street. The government also tried to convict a man who posted something on twitter about the situation. There are worse things in the world going on than a person writing something on twitter. These are some lessons I obtained from the G20 incident.

At home, a person has all of the privacy he or she needs, and does not have to deal with friends constantly, especially in a co ed dorm can often lead to controversy. Everyone is involved in each others business, and privacy is often lacking. Personally, l would rather have privacy lacking than to be bored alone at home. A student has a lot of distractions in a dorm, where at home a person has more time do take care of important things, and to study. Yet college years are supposed to be the most fun time of a person's life, and what 18 year old wants to study rather than go out. College students want to have a good time, and enjoy being young.

Dorm life is extremely convenient for a student. To be able to wake up five minutes before class starts, and not be late is great. In conclusion, dorm life is a better way to live than home life. Although home life has its advantages, it does not compare to the experience of living in a dorm. lntro Unrevised

Dorm life has its advantages over home life. In a dorm you are on your own, and quickly learn that your independence leads to much responsibilty. You have no one to tell you to go to class, or not to stay out late before an exam, you must use your own judgement. Dorm life teaches you many lessons, like how to be cleanly and how to cook. In the dorm, no matter what time it is, there are always friends or neighbors coming over. You could make new friends, and being an athlete it is ideal. The gym is right across the street, and the baseball field is my backyard. I could roll out of bed to go to class, then get back from class and go to sleep. Dorm life truly is a great way to live, and a way learn how to be responsible.

The New Literacy

This article sticks up for reading and writing on the internet. People, especially younger people are on the Internet now more than ever. They are constantly sending messages, and are reading like never before. This is beneficial according to a professor named Andrea Lunsford. Andrea explains that people are more enthusiastic to write online because they are actually getting a reaction from their writing. They are not forced to do their writing, and it is not just being read by a professor. Students adapt their writing style to their audience. Young people write very formal when writing to professors, and write less formally when chatting with friends. All of this writing is beneficial according to the article, and this article makes a strong case that writing online is not corrupting the ability of students.
I agree with this article, and feel as if the writer makes a strong and valid point. Students know when to write formally, and when to write less formally. Without the internet, younger people would only be reading and writing when it is necessary for a professor, and would indeed become less literate. All reading and communication is good in my opinion, and this article cleary states that.

1) Is online reading making teenagers less literate?
2) Without online reading, would people resort to reading more books?
3) Is communicating online truly affecting the way teenagers write papers for professors?

R U REALLY READING

1. Do you think there is a big difference between reading something off the computer, or reading it on paper?
2. Is reading blogs off the computer as resourceful as reading a newspaper?
3. Is reading online affecting the way teenagers take standardized tests?

This article is about how reading online is making people not want to read actual books anymore. Technology is constantly coming about with something newer and more advanced, and people are taking advantage of that. Reading has become outdated, and people enjoy reading things off the Internet. People are arguing that reading off the Internet is different from reading books. standardized test scores are decreasing on reading sections, and young people are losing the ability to sit down and focus. Children are spending more and more time online, and this will continue as long as new technology emerges.
To answer the question of the title, I feel as if people truly are reading through online texts. Reading is reading no matter what, it truly does not matter what type of form it is in. People are able to communicate with each other like never before, and information is constantly being consumed by people via the internet. I prefer the Internet, and feel as if it is just as good or even better than reading, since reading is so outdated.

Slow Death of a Written Word

This article tells about how younger people are drifting away from newspapers, and are now using the internet. Technology is affecting the way young people get their information, and newspapers are truly outdated. The writer tries to defend newspapers, saying that it is easier to read something printed out than on the internet. The author also tries to say that Newspapers are very easy to find information, and can be used for other things besides reading. However young kids do not want to carry around a cumbersome newspaper, and want to use what is easiest for them to use. I got the sense that the author knew that he is fighting a lost cause, and that young people are always going to use new technology over something that is outdated. The writer gives students 10 guidelines for writing media content, which are helpful in my opinion.
I agree with the author that young people are going to use the internet, and agree with what he said that most people under 25 years of age hate newspapers. I agree with most of his 10 rules, especially the one that states the shorter a writing is, the more interesting it is to read. I disagree with the fact that a piece of literature is easier to read when it is printed out rather than being read off line. I personally do not mind reading something off the computer, the only problem with it is that the internet could distract you through instant messages and facebook. I disagree with some of the writers rules as well.
I definitely agree with the first rule the author presents. The shorter a writing is, the more inclined I am to read it. Short and to the point is the way to go, especially in a time where young people have a short attention span due to the internet. I disagree with the rule that says images should be used to convey images, and should not be scattered. Images are a way to express yourself, and make writings more enjoyable. I also agree with the rule that says videos should not be used for content, since that is what the writings are for. If I were to make a change on this list, I would make the rules shorter when you click on them. When I clicked on one of the rules and saw it was very long and extensive, I personally felt less inclined to read it. These are the changes I would make to the 10 rules.

My friends and I always argue about which is a better sport, football or baseball. Some of my friends feel that baseball is the better sport because it is America's pastime, and like the fact that it lasts from April until October. However, some of my friends feel that baseball is boring to watch on television, and dislike that in baseball a person is not involved in every single play. People feel that while playing football, there is constant action, and enjoy how physical the game is. However, others feel that football does not have the anticipation that baseball has, nor is it as internationally valued . Everyone has their own opinion on this matter, yet the argument still remains.

Intro paragraph

The thing that I dislike the most about Queens College is the unnecessary precautions taken in the dorms, that differ from home. At Queens College, there are many rules and restrictions that people must abide by. In order to have a guest in your room, you have to sign that person in by giving the security guard your i.d. You can not have any parties in the dorms because there are R.A's on the floor. Also you must have your i.d. present with you in order to be allowed into the dorms, even though the security guards know you by face because you have been living there for a month. At home, you do not have to go through these unnecessary measures, and dorm life truly differs from home life.
My friends and I always argue about which is a better sport, football or baseball. Some of my friends feel that baseball is the better sport because it is America's pastime, and it lasts from April until October. However, some of my friends feel that baseball is boring to watch on television, and there is not much action while playing. People feel that while playing football, there is constant action, and a person is involved on every play. However, others feel that football does not have the anticipation that baseball has, and is less appealing than baseball. Everyone has their own opinion on this matter, yet the argument still remains.
The internet would be better if there were no pop ups. Constantly when a person is on a website, annoying pop ups redirect their attention, and annoy them. People should be able to explore the internet without any interruptions Pop ups are unwanted by everyone, and should be done away with. The internet is a great thing, and Pop ups are one negative aspect about it. There are many positives about the internet, yet pop ups are bringing it down.

Summary

I feel with the first article that it is a good thing that technology is making knowledge easier to obtain. The Internet is making things easier for people, and no longer does a person have to go to the library in order to research something. Yes, people are less inclined to work hard for knowledge, but this is not all that bad. Technology is making people adapt, and people are now able to share their ideas. People must cope with the fact that times are changing, and must adjust to that.
With the second article, I do not feel it is a bad thing that newspaper companies are losing revenue. Yes, they do keep the public informed about many important issues. However, why shouldn't the public use what is easier for them. It is survival of the fittest, and if the Internet is a better source than a newspaper, I feel as if the public should use it. Blogs, texts, and Internet websites make it easy to learn information with just one push of a button, and it is all free. Both arguments are valid in my opinion, and I agree with both.

Article 2

The newspaper industry is struggling due to the Internet. People are no longer buying newspapers, and are instead following the news via the Internet. According to the article, a person could take 7 minutes to skim through and a story on the Internet, while it takes 45 minutes to read a newspaper. However, by reading the articles through the newspaper, they are getting a more factual story, and are able to understand stories and events much better. Newspapers are constantly losing revenue due to the advancement in technology. Writers and newspaper distributors are getting layed off, and it is a tough situation.

Article One

The internet has changed the way people think and obtain knowledge. The time where people would read a book to learn information is dead and gone. Back in the day, people used books as their sources, and would read a whole book to learn one idea. People today are now spoiled by the internet, and are able to type in one word to obtain information. The internet slowly changed the way people handle learning, and technology truly changes the way people act. The human brain could change as an adult. If a person does something over and over, the brain will adapt to that action. The use of the internet has made it hard for people to concentrate during reading, and people have adapted to the change in technology.

Football Player Watches His Replacement While In Prison

Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was convicted of carrying an illegal firearm after shooting himself in the leg. He was sent to Riker's Island, and Mario Manningham toook his spot as the Giants wide receiver.

In the game last week against the Dallas Cowboys, Plaxico Burress called Mario Manningham before the game. He told Mario that he liked the way he was playing so far, and that he should try to win the number one play on sportcenter's top plays. The giants wide receivers are always up to no good. Eli Manning threw a perfect pass to Manningham, and Manningham bobble it on purpose to make an acrabtic catch instead of a routine one. He got the number one play on sportscenter. Mario tried to call Plaxico but it is against the rules of the prison for an inmate to have a cell phone, but Plaxico saw the play on television an approved.

The Onion

TheOnion.com is a website that takes important situations and inserts some humor into them. The media is constantly bringing negativity into the world, and it is good to see that there are some people out there who still have a sense of humor. The writers on this website use satire in their writings, and it makes the reading more entertaining and enjoyable. One of the articles I read was about Derek Jeter passing Lou Gehrig as the all time hit leader as a New York Yankee. This is a remarkable feat, however the article talks about how Derek Jeter was being applauded by the fans for not passing Harold Baines, a lesser known player. The article tells about how Jeter was honored to be behind Harold Baines on the all time hit list, and how he is one of the 675,000 players who is behind the designated hitter in hits. I found the article funny because Harold Baines is irrelevant to the story, yet the author made him the main focus of the article. Instead of focusing on the issue on hand, and giving facts, the author used satire to make the article comical.

Baseball game represents difference
Published September 20, 2009
Staten Island-When a group of kids from the South Shore played a baseball game against a group of kids from the North Shore, the difference between the two was shown. Last year, a single baseball game showed the difference between two social classes in one borough.
"The kids from the South Shore had fancy cars, and all the best baseball equipment," said Staten Island resident Robert Bernardo. "The kids from the North Shore had only the basic equipment and did not dress in expensive clothes."
The South Shore in Staten Island is an upper class area. It is located between Eltingville and Tottenville. The houses are very large and the residents reflect this wealth. The residents are mostly of the italian heritage.
The residents of the North Shore are of the lower middle class. The ethnicity is mostly irish, and they do not have many unnecessary material goods. They work hard, and take pride in their area.
The Baseball game took place at Miller Field approximately one year ago. The North Shore was the first team to score, yet the South Shore ended up winning the game. That was not the main point of the exhibition game. The message was that even through teenagers playing a game one could tell the difference between the two different parts of the Island. A difference between social classes is present, and this event portrayed it.

Blogging

Blogging is present in the world today, and is a major part of the news. Blogging presents many ideas, and does contribute to making the public more informed. This article points out that the writings in newspapers are a more informative way of telling about a particular subject. The author feels as if anyone could write a blog and not be well informed about the situation. Bloggers have no particular obligation to the situation, and it is not their job to write about something. The author feels as if bloggers just want attention, and do not relay the facts to the reader. The blogs are too opinionized, and bloggers do not go through all the troubles newspaper writers do. The author tells about particular struggles that newspaper writers went through to obtain facts of a story, and how much more persistent they are than bloggers. This author favors newspaper journalists, for the fact that they reveal the truth and back that up through facts.
The two authors both feel as if blogging is changing the world today. Everywhere you go you can see a blog, and blogs relay much information. Blogs are going to become even more popular, as portrayed in both pieces. However the two blogs differ. The author of the piece we read in class feels as if blogging gives a more personal view of a situation. Blogs do not give half facts, and the opinions are often informative. The other piece however describes journalism as more informative, and how it involves less made up truths. The author feels as if journalists fight for the truth, and bloggers just want attention. The two pieces are similiar because they show that blogging is very popular, yet each has their own opinion about blogging.
I agree with the writing we read in class because it is a more personalized way of telling about something. The writer is not telling about half of the facts, and is not trying to impress his boss. The piece of work is not changed by editors and publishers, and I like the fact that the author gives his or her own view on the subject. Just giving facts could be a boring way to convey a message. Anyone could use a blog, and it is beneficial to society. This is how I feel about blogging in the world today.

I Remember

I remember when a group of kids were playing a game of baseball at Miller Field in Staten Island. One of our friends was from Tottenville High School, and said that kids that his school wanted to challenge us to a game. Most of my friends were from the North Shore at that time, and we decided to play against the kids from the South Shore. This one baseball game illustrated the dinstinction of two social classes in Staten Island.
The kids from the South Shore in Staten Island have a stereotype of being a rich, italian, guido type person. They drive the fancy cars, and say the word "bro" in every sentence. They live in huge houses, and dress in a particular way. They where a fitted yankee hat, a jordan basketball shirt, a pair of expensive jeans, and jordan shoes to match the shirt. They also where a big chain that is too big, A North Shore kid is typically a lower middle class resident. They are mostly irish and italian. They dont drive expensive cars, and live in smaller houses. They dont get as many girls as the kids from the South Shore, and dress in a particular way. They wear cargo shorts or jeans, a plain t shirt, and reebok or nike shoes. There truly is a distinction between the two groups.
I remember when the kids from the South Shore started to show up to the field. They all had the white infiniti car, with the tinted winfows. They had the fake tans, and were saying "bro" the whole time. The kids from the North Shore showed up and had old beat up cars, and wouldn't talk to the kids from the South Shore. During the game, the two groups argued about every single call, and wouldn't just play the game. The team from the South Shore won the game eventually, but that was not the big picture to me. The big picture was that Staten Island is a place of division, and a separation. This is what I remember about Staten Island.

The Staten Island Idea

By: Robert Bernardo

The borough of Staten Island can be described as a world within its own. This island contains many towns and neighborhoods in which people affiliate themselves with. On one side of the Island is Tottenville, and on the other side is Saint George. Between these two ends of the island, all of the other neighborhoods exist. The geography of the Island is simple, yet the lifestyle of each person differs, and is complex.

Stereotypes go hand in hand with living on Staten Island. People from other states or even boroughs have a certain picture in their head when they hear a person is from Staten Island. People often think that a person from Staten Island is Italian, or tries to be Italian. They feel that we are often loud, try to have a brooklyn accent, and are selfish or full of ourselves. This is true for some people, and they tarnish the reputation of an entire borough. For example, my summer baseball team went to a tournament in Aberdeen Maryland. This was a legit tournament, with many top teams from the east coast participating. The umpire made a call that could go either way. A player on my team threw his helmet, and cursed at the umpire in front of an entire stadium. The player was ejected from the complex, and whenever the officials of this tournament hear a team is from Staten Island, they have instilled in their minds that all people conduct themselves in this manner. This shows how the action of one person further instills a stereotype in the minds of others about Staten Island.

On the contrary, many people from Staten Island are hard working people who live in the middle class. Staten Island is divided into the North Shore, and the South Shore. Some of the people from the South Shore are the people who promote the stereotype previously mentioned. The people from the North Shore are often people of lower economic stature, who conduct themselves in a more presentable way. They are less flashy, and do not need the expensive cars or the big house to be happy. Having lived in the middle of the Island, I have seen the difference between the two different lifestyles, and their truly is a distinction. The Island is a place where everyone knows each other. Each group of kids has their own clique, and everyone is involved in each others business. Staten Island has its own stereotype, and is all about being divided into groups. With all the criticism about the Island, I am still proud to have lived there for eighteen years.
